Legionella

Legionella pneumophila causes legionnaires’ disease (also known as legionellosis). Therefore, employers, and those in control of premises, are required to ensure that exposure to the organism is prevented or, where that is not reasonably practicable, adequately controlled.

According to the Approved Code of Practice on the prevention or control of legionellosis, the following systems present a risk:

  • Water systems incorporating a cooling tower
  • Water systems incorporating an evaporative condenser
  • Hot water services
  • Hot and cold water services, irrespective of size, in premises where occupants are particularly susceptible such as healthcare or residential homes for the elderly
  • Humidifiers and air washers which create a spray of water droplets and in which the water temperature is likely to exceed 20°C
  • Spa baths and pools in which warm water is deliberately agitated and recirculated

If you are responsible for any of the above systems, you will not only need to appoint a person to take managerial responsibility but also ensure that a competent person carries out the risk assessment and produces the written scheme for minimising the risk from exposure.

As an occupational hygienist with 20 years experience, I am well qualified to carry out the necessary assessment or to audit work done on your behalf by others.

If you need help with legionella risk assessment or auditing, contact me, Paul Leadbetter.
